How to make Oriental Fried Rice
Prepare Ingredients
If using day-old rice, break up any clumps with your fingers to separate the grains.
Chop vegetables and protein into small, uniform pieces for even cooking.
Heat the Pan
Heat a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil and swirl to coat the pan evenly.
Cook Aromatics
Add minced garlic and ginger to the hot oil. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
Add Protein and Vegetables
Add the diced protein to the pan. Stir-fry until the protein is cooked through.
Add diced vegetables to the pan. Cook for a few minutes until they are tender-crisp. If using frozen vegetables, they should be thawed and heated through.
Add Rice
Increase the heat to high. Add the cooked rice to the pan, breaking up any remaining clumps with a spatula or wooden spoon.
Stir-fry the rice with the other ingredients, mixing well to combine. This helps the rice heat evenly and absorb flavors.
Seasoning
Drizzle soy sauce over the rice and toss to coat evenly. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the amount of soy sauce based on your preference for saltiness and color.
Optional: Add Scrambled Eggs
Push the fried rice to one side of the pan. Pour beaten eggs into the empty side of the pan and scramble until just cooked.
Mix the scrambled eggs into the fried rice.
Final Touches
Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. If you like, garnish with chopped green onions for freshness and color.
Serve
Serve the fried rice hot as a main dish or as a side dish with other Asian-inspired dishes.
Tips & Tricks
Use Day-Old Rice: Day-old rice is drier and less sticky, making it ideal for frying. Freshly cooked rice can become mushy when stir-fried.
High Heat: Stir-frying on high heat ensures that the ingredients cook quickly and evenly without becoming soggy.
Customize: Feel free to add your favorite ingredients like mushrooms, water chestnuts, or different types of meats to make the fried rice your own.
