FAQS

  1. How do I make phirni from scratch using rice flour?

To make phirni from scratch, start by heating 2/3 of the milk in a pan until it boils. Add sugar to the boiling milk. In a separate bowl, mix the remaining milk with rice flour until smooth, then add this mixture to the boiling milk while stirring continuously until it thickens to a pudding-like consistency. Pour the mixture into small earthen bowls for setting.

  2. Is phirni suitable for gluten-free diets?

Yes, phirni is suitable for gluten-free diets as it is made with rice flour, which is naturally gluten-free. Just ensure that all other ingredients, such as milk and sugar, are also gluten-free to maintain dietary compatibility.

  3. What can I use as a substitute for saffron in phirni?

If you don't have saffron, you can substitute it with a pinch of turmeric for color, though it won't provide the same flavor. Alternatively, you can use a few drops of vanilla extract or a different aromatic spice like cardamom to enhance the flavor of your phirni.

  4. How should I store leftover phirni?

Leftover phirni can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Make sure to let it cool completely before sealing it to maintain its creamy texture. You can serve it chilled or reheat it gently before serving.

  5. What are some good pairings for phirni dessert?

Phirni pairs beautifully with a variety of Indian sweets and snacks. You can serve it alongside crispy fried snacks like samosas or pakoras, or enjoy it with a side of fresh fruit. A cup of masala chai or cardamom tea also complements the flavors of phirni nicely.
