    mutton
  • 2piece
    grated tomatoes
  • 1piece
    large finely chopped onion
  • 1tbsp
    ginger and garlic

    masala
  • 2tbsp

    turmeric powder
  • 1piece
    cinnamon stick
  • 1piece
    bay leaf
  • 1tbsp
    geera seeds
  • 3tbsp
    salt
  • 4piece
    potatoes, chopped and halved

How to make South African Mutton Curry

  1. Rinse the mutton.

  2. Heat oil in a medium-sized pot over medium heat.

  3. Add chopped onions, geera seeds, cinnamon stick, bay leaf, and ginger and garlic to the hot oil.

  4. Allow to simmer for 5 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes.

  5. Add grated tomatoes and simmer for another 5 minutes.

  6. Add all the spices and simmer for another 5 minutes, ensuring it does not burn.

  7. Add the washed mutton and mix well to coat with the spices.

  8. Cook the mutton for 15 minutes.

  9. Add 1.5 cups of water and cook for another 30 minutes, checking every 10 minutes. Add more water if needed.

  10. Add salt to taste.

  11. Once the mutton is soft and cooked, add the chopped potatoes and cook for 15 minutes.

  12. Remove the pot lid to allow the gravy to thicken once the potatoes are soft.

  13. Serve with rice and a salad made of grated carrots, diced onions, diced chillies, cucumber, and lettuce. Add salt and a little vinegar to taste.
