Dal khichdi is a simple and healthy Indian dish made with rice and dal. It's a protein-packed, aromatic, and delicious meal that can be prepared in under 25 minutes. Perfect for a regular healthy diet, it requires no side dish other than a pickle.

- 3/4cupraw rice
- 1/4cuptoor dal
- 4cupshot water
- 1piecetomato
- 1pieceonion
- 7clovegarlic
- 1piecegreen chilly
- 1 1/2tspsambar powder
- 1/2tspKashmiri chilly powder
- 1/4tspasafoetida powder
- 2tbspghee
- 1tbspcoriander leaves
- 1tspcumin seeds
- salt to taste
How to make Dal Khichdi
Preparation
Soak the rice and dal for 10 minutes.
Cooking
Heat 1.5 tbsp of ghee in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds and let them pop.
Add garlic and sauté until it turns light brown.
Add chopped onion and green chilly. Sauté until light brown.
Turn the flame low, Add sambar powder, chilly powder, asafoetida powder, and salt. Sauté for 20 seconds.
Add chopped tomato and coriander leaves. Sauté until the ghee separates.
Strain the soaked rice and dal. Add them to the tomato mix and sauté for 1 minute.
Add 4 cups of hot water and cook for 3 whistles.
Turn off the flame. Once the pressure is released, open the lid and add 0.5 tsp of ghee. Mix well.
Tips & Tricks
Adding 1 tsp of butter during plating enhances the taste of Dal Khichdi.
