Mandazi is a popular East African fried bread, often enjoyed with tea for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.

I am sharing this simple recipe that was taught to me by my grandmother, as a first-timer.

Ingredients

16 Servings
(1 serving = 1 piece)
  • 4cups
    all-purpose flour
  • 1tbsp
    baking powder
  • 2tbsp
    sugar
  • 1tbsp
    salted butter
  • 1/4tsp
    salt
  • 351mL
    warm water
  • 1
    large egg
  • 3L
    oil for deep frying

How to make Mandazi (Fried Bread)

  1. Add all the dry ingredients and mix well.

  2. Add butter and rub into the flour until you get a crumbly texture.

  3. Add the egg and mix, then add water and continue working the dough for at least 4-5 minutes.

  4. Cover the dough with clear wrap or foil and let it rest for at least 1-2 hours.

  5. Cut the dough into 4 equal sized balls.

  6. Pour the cooking oil into a pan and preheat to 190-200 degrees Celsius.

  7. Roll each ball and cut into quarters, then deep fry them until golden brown.
