Ingredients

Dal Ingredients

  • 1cup
    lentils
  • 1tsp
    turmeric powder
  • 1tsp
    salt
  • 4cups
    water

Tadka Ingredients

  • 2tbsp
    ghee
  • 1tsp
    cumin seeds
  • 1
    onion chopped
  • 2
    cloves garlic
  • 1in
    ginger
  • 2
    green chilies slit
  • 1
    tomato chopped
  • 1tsp
    red chili powder
  • 1tsp
    coriander powder
  • 1tsp
    garam masala
  • 2tbsp
    fresh coriander leaves

How to make Dal Fry with Tadka

Cooking the Dal

  1. Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.

  2. In a pot, combine the lentils, turmeric powder, salt, and water.

  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are soft.

Preparing the Tadka

  1. In a separate pan, heat ghee over medium heat.

  2. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

  4. Stir in minced garlic, ginger, and slit green chilies, and cook for a minute.

  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.

  6. Mix in red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala.

  7. Cook for a few minutes until the spices are well combined.

Combining Dal and Tadka

  1. Pour the tadka over the cooked dal and mix well.

  2. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.

Tips & Tricks

  1. For a richer flavor, you can add a squeeze of lemon juice before serving.

  2. Serve with rice or naan for a complete meal.
