How to make Orange Chocolate Cake

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease/flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Set aside.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream granulated sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy.

  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

  5. Mix in freshly squeezed orange juice and orange zest.

  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients.

  7. Stir in vanilla extract until just combined.

  8. Divide the batter between the cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

  9. Cool the cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  1. Place chopped dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl.

  2. Heat heavy cream in a saucepan until simmering, then pour over the chocolate.

  3. Let it sit for a minute, then stir until smooth. Add orange juice if desired and mix well.

Assembly

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and pour half of the Orange Chocolate Ganache over it.

  2. Carefully place the second cake layer on top and pour the remaining ganache over the entire cake.

  3. Allow the ganache to set for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

FAQS

  1. What are some dietary substitutions I can make for the Orange Chocolate Cake recipe?

If you're looking for dietary substitutions, you can use gluten-free all-purpose flour instead of regular flour for a gluten-free version. For a dairy-free option, substitute the buttermilk with almond milk mixed with a tablespoon of vinegar, and use a dairy-free butter alternative. You can also replace the eggs with flaxseed meal mixed with water (1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal + 2.5 tablespoons of water per egg) for a vegan version.

  2. How should I store leftover Orange Chocolate Cake to keep it fresh?

To store leftover Orange Chocolate Cake, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. It can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. If you want to store it for a longer period, consider freezing individual slices. Just make sure to wrap them well to prevent freezer burn.

  3. What are some great pairing suggestions for serving Orange Chocolate Cake?

Orange Chocolate Cake pairs wonderfully with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. For beverages, consider serving it with a cup of coffee or a glass of dessert wine, such as a sweet Riesling. The citrus notes in the cake also complement herbal teas, like chamomile or mint.

  4. What is the best way to ensure my Orange Chocolate Cake turns out moist and fluffy?

To ensure your Orange Chocolate Cake is moist and fluffy, make sure to cream the butter and sugar until light and airy before adding the eggs. Also, be careful not to overmix the batter once you add the dry ingredients; mix just until combined. Using fresh orange juice and zest will also enhance the moisture and flavor of the cake.

  5. How can I tell when my Orange Chocolate Cake is done baking?

You can tell your Orange Chocolate Cake is done baking when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs attached. Additionally, the edges of the cake should start to pull away from the sides of the pan. Keep an eye on the cake during the last few minutes of baking to avoid overcooking.
